Animals - Unproductive/Dying
Project groups develop animal insurance plans (community managed livestock insurance systems managed by project participants) to cover the death or loss of animals, and some country programs follow a national animal insurance system. Our field staff monitors each situation closely and maintains accurate records. In extreme cases, such as when goats died in the Philippines during Typhoon Haiyan or when thousands of livestock were lost in the 2017 Nepal flooding, we replace the animals as soon as animals are available.
We educate the communities we serve on safe and humane handling of animals. We also demonstrate that a humanely treated animal makes economic sense- it grows, becomes stronger, succumbs to disease less often, and can mean the difference between a healthy year and a year of serious hunger for the family. Our project participants value the animals' lives greatly and their lives often depend on the animals staying alive.
